The Rambla Barcelona – Where to Wander

Artists on La Rambla in Barcelona, Spain

By Nancy Todd

Filled with shady plane trees, The Rambla Barcelona in the old city is a broad pedestrian boulevard.  It is the center of a mile long street that is a straight shot from Pl. Catalunya down to a statue of Columbus on the Mediterranean Sea.

There are few streets with the name “rambla.”  La Rambla means seasonal river and at one time these streets were o torrents of water.  Today, when you think the wet Rambla has had a rush of a river, it is the highly necessary street cleaners hosing down the dirt. Bordering this beautiful boulevard is exquisite architecture like the Liceu Opera House. The Bruno Quadras Building with its whimsical protruding umbrellas on the facade, always bring a smile to my face.  The best buy on this street are flowers sold in numerous stalls.   Your Scoopettes, Regina and I, often buy flowers to take as a dinner party gift. Noisy and chaotic, thousands of tourists pack this street.  Backpackers, wide berthed, sunburned folks huff and puff along.  Intertwined lovers, crying kids, and a plethora of pickpockets are common.  Guitar players, accordion players, and people pretending they are fake statues, compete for the stray euro.

No one who lives in Barcelona would consider a relaxing saunter here.  Have you ever heard of anyone from New York City say, “I can’t wait to stroll in Times Square?”  To check the “I went to see the La Rambla Barcelona” box,  go early in the morning .  You can take in the fresh air, the trees, and the fine architecture.  The ATM machine can be used with ease as you won’t have to look over your shoulder for a thief.  Buy some flowers for your sweetie.
