With all my adorable European outfits tightly packed away, the essential paperwork and tickets printed, basic Spanish flashcards in hand, and the tearful goodbyes said and done, there was nothing more to do than board my plane and begin a new, wondrous life abroad in Madrid, Spain.
Baby, it's cold outside and quiet on the fiesta front in Spain. You may hear an occasional drum or coronet. Or see a priest in a funny hat and dress (do you think they are really transvestites?) leading an entourage at night with candles. Here is The January Scoop for events in Spain.

The Scoop is that tomorrow is Kings' Day in Spain. Do not miss the Cavalcada de Reyes, or Kings' Parade this evening going on all over Spain, from small villages to big cities like Madrid and Barcelona.

If you are lucky in your travels to Madrid, Barcelona, Toledo, etc., you may be met with an Art Attack in the airport. This is almost as good as being met by friends. The travelers in this video were welcomed at Heathrow Airport.

Santas slip into modern Spain with little fanfare.
Santas are not in the modern Spanish department stores making promises to little kids. Nor scaring the wits out of babies. Phony elves do not skip merrily vying for expensive photos.

With the holidays taking center stage, events in Spain are a little slimmer this month. Here's what your Scoopettes suggest:

By Nancy Todd Villages, towns and cities in Spain have staged Christmas markets for centuries. Sad, mournful religious figures are the majority of hot items for sale. It is the tradition that when the children leave the family and start their new family, they buy all new actors for their nativity scenes. We see more people browsing than buying. Markets rise up at the beginning [...]
Walking down the street in Barcelona, a smoky, sweet scent draws me to the street vendors, the casteneros. In many cities including Granada, Madrid, Toledo and Seville, the Autumn food culture in Spain is being celebrated.

Night walks in the medieval neighborhoods of Spain are magical.
Shhhhhhhh. Listen. You may hear a shrill whistle, twittering up the scale and back down. This is a sound of old Spain, and still occaisionally found today. That call means the Knifesharpeners are pushing their motorcycles through the quiet plazas and streets of neighborhoods.
Old Spain images are found with the vendors that sell hot, roasted chestnuts. Sold in newspaper cones, the smells of roasing chestnuts waft through the streets.

We Scoopettes love the markets for traditional food in Spain. In Autumn, they are bursting with bright colors and textures. This photo essay takes you to three popular markets: Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville. Big, curvy orange sqaushes the size of a soccer ball. Squashes that are white, striped, or spotted are on the shelves and I have no idea what their names are. Dozens of kinds of mushrooms. All food, an earthy, sensuous delight

It is Autumn and to many people in Spain, and to your Scoopettes, this means mushroom time. The chilly days call to people who forage the traditional food, wild mushrooms in Galicia, Catalunya, Andalucia, etc.

When I arrived in Barcelona, I stayed on Carrer de la Rivera de Sant Miquel for five nights. A street name with seven words was over my head when I was trying to learn the difference between “si” and “no.” If someone had asked where I was staying, I would have muttered something about a river. No one asked. I had no Barcelona street smarts. Just another perturbed pedestrian figuring out more info on Spain.
