Read's on Mallorca
By Regina Winkle-Bryan
Take a 500-year old Spanish masia, a vision, years moving dirt and stacking stones, and an idyllic Mallorca Island setting and you’ve got Read’s Hotel and Spa. A boutique hotel with just twenty-three rooms, Read’s has morphed over the last twenty years from a dilapidated pile of stones to a lush five-star oasis.

Read’s has come a long way since owner Vivian Read first laid eyes on it in 1988. The hotel is proof that with the right amounts of vision, time, perseverance and water, a broken down farmhouse and a dirt-patch can be transformed into 20,000 square meters flourishing Island bliss. Read’s is named after Vivian Read and his family, who are the owners and the hotel’s core staff. Mr. Read had worked in London as a solicitor most of his life but gave it all up when he came across the C’an Moragues Estate while on holiday on Mallorca.

These days Read’s is one of the island’s most unique boutique hotels. All the rooms at Read’s were conceived by Vivian, and each one is completely different. Plus, the hotel is filled with many captivating antiques that the Read family brought with them from the UK (antique collectors: prepare to be impressed!). While many who holiday on Mallorca want to be near the Sea, Read’s is inland and gives visitors a glimpse of a part of the island often overlooked. This is the spot for a quiet countryside holiday, though the coast is an easy day-trip from the hotel…in fact, everything is an easy day-trip from the hotel in that Mallorca is not all that big.

Read's on Mallorca - Outside
Read’s is the opposite of a holiday to Magaluf or any of the other numerous pre-packaged holidays popular on the Balearic Islands. Located at the foot of the Tramuntana Mountains, which run along the west coast of the Island from the northern tip to the south coast, Read’s is located on the edges of Santa Maria, a small town between to Palma and Inca. It is connected to Son Sant Joan International Airport by freeway and to Palma both by freeway and railway.
