Photo Scoops (no.10): Human Statues On The Rambla

Photo Scoop of The Month - La Rambla

By Nancy Todd

The Rambla, a mile long boulevard in Barcelona, is touted in all the tour books as the place to be:  be seen, be robbed, and be wowed by the glorious architecture and antics.  For me it is the Times Square, the Picadilly Circus of Barcelona.  I love to go early morning when all is still, the air moist and fresh.  And, must admit, I am intrigued by the human statues that line The Rambla.  My first reaction is how the hell can they stand all that greasy make up in the middle of August?  They must be making good moolah is all I can deduct.  Sometimes, after being still for minutes, they lurch scaring me and all the little kids.  Not a career for me.

This guy is scary as is and when he leaps out, everyone jumps.  The human statues like you giving them euros.

Tell us about street performers you like, don’t like, or just wish they would go away.

I know the guy who does the football act on La Ramblas used to make around 300 Euros on a busy summer day.

That’s a lot of cash! Yeah, I imagined they do it for the moolah!
