Nothing like sitting right in the lap of luxury to get one’s mind off tough financial times. Yes, most people are trying to save their bucks, and for many this means lux is out. But wait! Before you give up and check into the nearest Best Western, consider this: most hotels in Barcelona are now offering deals. Big deals. Because of the financial ‘crisis’ in Spain, many five-stars are cutting rates. Check out these fine Barcelona options:

Casa Fuster: My favorite hotel in Barcelona. So much style, so much class. It’s also a historic building. Woody Allen shot part of his film Vicky Cristina Barcelona here. http://www.hotelcasafuster.com/

Grand Marina: On the port right near the Ramblas and the beach, this five-star is in the world trade center building. http://www.grandmarinahotel.com

Hotel Cram: Off the tourist track but still in downtown, Cram is a stylish option with an award-winning restaurant. Just four stars on this one. http://www.hotelcram.com/

There are many more hotels to choose from. For a list of over 900 city hotels and their ratings, check out easytobook.com.

The Scoop wants to hear from you! Got a hotel to recommend or dis? Let us know.

We are planning our first visit to Barcelona for the month of May, 2011. We want to save money by renting an apartment. Your comments about the popularity of smoking in Spain and the burgeoning second hand sales shops were of special interest. Neither of us smoke. We have found few adds (only one so far) for no smoking apartments. We also don’t know the areas of Barcelona and what to expect. Where are the Quiet areas, the safe areas, the less polluted areas? Has anyone tried renting a furnished apartment for a month without bedding or utensils, bought what they need from a thrift shop (is there anything like Goodwill stores in Spain?), and donated it upon departure?
Do you have anything in your archives that addresses these issues? I’m going to put “thespainscoop” in my favorites.
