Christmas Lights – Spain Images

Christmas Lights - Spain Images

By Nancy Todd

Beginning in October in Granada, Madrid, Seville, Barcelona and cities all over Spain,  government crews struggle with masses of tangled wires that become amazing Christmas lights.  They attach these wires to buildings on opposite sides of the streets.   Festoons of lights loop from building to building down the streets, sometimes as many as four or five swags to a block.  These swags form an archway, a dancing wonderment especially when it is windy.  The Scoopometer gives Christmas lights a big, fat ten.

Each night, these lasting Spain images are switched on in early evening and are off before eleven thus saving electricity.  Some motifs are cheesy:  wrapped presents, Santa, chandliers, snowflakes, and an occaisional camel.  Some say “Bones Fiesta.”  I thought this was some kind of festival celebrating bones.  But no, it is Catalan for “Happy Holidays.”

My favorite designs are the shooting stars with hundreds of tiny lights swooping through the tails of the stars.  It does not matter what the design is, they hold holiday enchantment.  Children and parents pause to look up in wide eyed astonishment.  Regina and I will be out on the streets with our friends, acting like children caught up in the magic.  Cheesy or not, we love Christmas in Spain.
